  Spedale degli Innocenti

  The Spedale degli Innocenti in Florence, Italy, was the first foundling hospital built in Europe. It was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1419. He as also the builder of the dome of the Duomo there. A horizontal wheel brought abandoned infants into the hospital. It was one of the first renaissance buildings and is beautiful in its coherent architecture.
