I travel to get close to something I cannot find at home. There are destinations that really turn me on. I like places that have layers of culture like India or Mexico, where you look at something and you see centuries of knowledge and experience engraved on people's faces. To me that is a different kind of beauty. I believe that memory of all that has come before us accumulates in our old brain so that we carry our long history within our bodies and faces. In Western countries we learn how to cover that up to conform to some idealized beauty norm but in Third World countries you can see it clearly. And that makes me feel close to even the most unlikely people. Like discovering some long lost relative.
